This historical snippet begins with the blood lust of duels over 200 years ago. The most famous duel between Alexander Hamilton Sr and Aaron Burr Jr was presaged by a duel between Hamilton’s son, Philip Schuyler Hamilton, and George Eacker in 1801. The 19-year-old Philip died in the duel. It was not a good omen for the Hamilton family.
Most of us have seen the Broadway play Hamilton in some form or another. Hamilton died after being shot by Vice President Aaron Burr in 1804.
What most of us do not know is that Alexander Hamilton Jr was able to settle the score with Aaron Burr Jr about 30 years later.
History tends to mark Aaron Burr as a brilliant but flawed human. Aside from killing Alexander Hamilton Sr, he was also tried for treason for conspiring to start a war between Spain and Mexico. Afterward, he became poor and took “Edwards” as his new surname. So what does a clever, desperate man do in these circumstances? He found and married the wealthiest widow in America. However, within months, his new wife discovered his misuse of her money and that he had committed adultery many times since their nuptials.
His new wife filed for divorce and selected Alexander Hamilton Jr as her lawyer. After being subjected to the divorce court churn for three years, Hamilton exposed every misdeed by Burr and in the end Burr lost everything. Moreover, at the end of the trial Burr suffered a severe stroke and died hours after the divorce was finalized.
