This is the story of one Y chromosome’s 250,000-year, 8,000-mile journey — from the Great Rift Valley through a near-extinction supervolcano, across the Red Sea, over the Eurasian Steppe, and finally across the Atlantic in 1640 — told as the road trip of a small, unbothered yellow bus who survives because he never needed anyone’s help. My hypothetical archaeogeneticist, Dr. Jill White, joins to explain how Y-DNA markers work and why a chromosome that never recombines makes the best possible diary.
This video is a little esoteric, but it has a simple basis. All men carry a Y chromosome with an ancestral marker that goes back as far as science can trace. The Y-DNA test at FamilyTreeDNA allowed me to trace my male lineage back about 250,000 years. Simply put, scientists can analyze DNA from people throughout the ages and compare ancient DNA with modern DNA to identify common patterns. These analyses are not perfect because both the amount of ancient DNA and the number of modern people tested are limited. However, much progress has been made over the last 20 years, so useful conclusions can now be made. However, as more data are collected, we will know more about our origins.
